Acne and Homeopathy

Recently I’ve been getting an influx of clients suffering with adult acne. Acne, a condition many of believe we have shaken off in our teens, can suddenly come back to haunt us in adult years. Although not life-threatening this condition can be debilitating in that it erodes self-confidence and sometimes prevents the sufferer from leading a fulfilling life.

Personally, as a sufferer of acne for many years it was eventually homeopathy that truly healed my skin. This blog post focuses on acne and how homeopathy might be able to help.

Your skin

As our skin is the largest organ of the body, it is also considered of lesser importance in comparison to say, the liver or the kidneys. Often any toxins are thrown out onto the skin in order to protect the organs beneath it. This is the most evident when we suffer an allergic reaction and hives or a rash appears on the skin. Often acne is considered a natural part of growing up and many teenagers suffer with greasy skin, pimples and pustules as hormones change and puberty begins.  Generally skin complaints can be linked to poor liver or bowel function and using homeopathic remedies and/or herbs these can be strengthened in order to help detox the system so that toxins are eradicated through the bowel rather than onto the skin.

So what exactly is acne?

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder of the skin’s sebaceous glands and hair follicles that affects about 80% of people between the ages of 12 and 24. During puberty high levels of hormones are produced in both girls and boys. This leads to the production of large quantities of sebum. Sebum is an irritant that can clog the pores and form a pimple which may become infected and form a pustule. Most pimples are found on the face, neck, back, chest, and shoulders. Acne is not a serious health threat but it can cause scars. Hormones don’t go away after adolescence and many women still get premenstrual acne from of the release of progesterone after ovulation.

As with any skin troubles, acne can be classified roughly as mild, moderate, and severe. Eruptions or lesions may be confined to face, shoulders, upper chest, back, buttocks, etc. One may notice greasy skin. Blackheads can be the presenting feature in some. In some, the acne can be very severe with abscess and cyst formation with heavy scarring. The lesions can be macular, papular, or rash-like in many patients. Acne Rosacea is the variety affecting the middle aged women and men. It is characterized by marked red eruptions, pustules, etc without the formation of blackheads.

Suppression of acne with strong chemical agents

Most patients of acne are young children entering their teens, when they want to look their best. Therefore, most of them resort to creams, ointments, and lotions they find attractively advertised through various media. Some get good results in the short term. However, in most cases, these measures prove only temporary. They give just palliative results until the person uses the particular local application and the acne can return back aggravated once he or she weans off it.

Worse still, suppressing acne can affect more vital organs and the person can start suffering from new symptoms and problems after they suppress it. Any skin eruption that is suppressed does not cure the patient. It certainly does not mean you have no right to look beautiful! Just that your skin needs more delicate treatment that will wipe out acne permanently with milder homeopathic medicines suited to your constitution.

Acne and Homeopathy

When you see a homeopath it’s their job to get a thorough understanding of your health and the exact symptoms you are experiencing, so that they can find a homeopathic remedy which matches you and your symptoms.

During this confidential, in-depth ‘case-taking’ process a homeopath will want to know precise details of your current illness, but will also consider other aspects of your health including your past medical history, diet, lifestyle and personality.

You will be asked many questions and some of them will seem strange for those not used to homeopathy. The practitioner is building up a picture of your unique make up, a bit like putting together a jigsaw puzzle.

Homeopathy is a holistic medicine and as such takes into account all aspects of the individual and their symptoms before making a prescription. This first consultation will usually take one hour.

The first follow up consultation will usually be around 4-5 weeks after the first prescription. The session will be slightly shorter, and the homeopath will ask about changes that have occurred, using their detailed notes as a reference point, before deciding on the next course of treatment.

The number of consultations needed is difficult to predict – it depends on a number of factors such as the age of the patient, how long the symptoms have been going on and their individual response to the prescription. Skin can be slow to heal but the results, with time, are worth it.

Have you had enough of your acne? Then maybe it’s time to contact me today for a free 15-minute clarity consultation to see how homeopathy might be able to help you.

Until next time, have a happy healthy week!
